What’s the first thing you think of when you hear, “all-you-can-eat”? How much? How good is it? What am I actually eating? Table 92닭, Seongnam-dong's newest place to eat, answers these questions thusly: a bargain … Some of the best chicken in Ulsan … Chicken.
When you walk into the restaurant, you’ll have two seating options: chairs or floor. Try and go with the chairs option. An hour on the floor with a Westerner butt can be a little torturous.
Taking a gander at the menu you’ll find one main menu item and three prices. Chicken! 9,900 won before 5:00 PM. Chicken! 12,900 won from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Chicken! 9,900 won after 10:00 PM.
When you’re seated, the servers will bring a pot of rice with dried seaweed sprinkled over top. This is jumeogbab (주먹밥) or Korean rice balls. Use the pair of plastic gloves found under the pot to kneed the seaweed into the warm rice and make ¼ fist sized balls. If you want, dip them into the kimchi soup (김치찌개) to add a little spice.
The server will also bring kimchi, lettuce to wrap the cooked chicken and dipping sauces. These delicious sauces include a mayonnaise with soy sauce, sweet chili, and freshly cut hot pepper in soy sauce. Try them all! Each will tingle your tongue in their own way.
However, Table 92닭 restaurant is really only about one thing. Chicken. Chicken. Chicken. But, where is it? Table 92닭 is self-service. The server will initially give you side dishes and take your drink order. But, it’s up to you to grab your own chicken.
At the back of the restaurant you’ll find a buffet of sorts. Here you can refill your side dishes and sauces. It’s here where you stack your chicken plate with mounds upon mounds of chicken.
You want spicy chicken? Check! Soy sauce chicken? Check! Chicken chicken? Check! Gizzards? … Uh … (Everybody’s got their own thing.) Check!
Table 92닭 does have a snag, though. Grilling! Unlike pork, chicken cooks fast. And at Table 92닭, the grills are hot. Possible outcome of this equation: you take the ten-foot stroll to refill some sides and come back to extra crispy, extra dark chicken.
The trick is to evenly space your meat around the center of the coals, rotate and check often. This slowly and evenly cooks your little morsels of bird heaven to juicy perfection. And, if you’re a slow blinking person and miss the split second between golden brown and coal black, feel free to press the ding-dong button at the end of the table and ask the server for a new grate.
Even if you’re not into the idea of DIY cooking, Table 92닭 deserves mention just for the supremacy of its chicken. In all of Ulsan, there’s not another restaurant that better combines value and quality.
